Pop Culture Guilty Pleasures: 2ge+her

2gether 2ge+her

One of my all-time favorite boybands is 2ge+her (pronounced “together”, for those unfamiliar), a satirical boyband created by MTV during the boyband heyday.

2ge+her was made up of the five “standard” members of the boyband: the Heartthrob, the Shy One, the Cute One, the Older Brother, and the Bad Boy.  Together, they starred in a full-length feature movie, released two albums, and spawned an MTV series that ran for two years.  When I moved last fall, my VHS copy of the 2ge+her movie came with me (along with my VCR, so I could watch it any old time I wanted), and I’m not at all embarrassed to admit that I’ve got a few 2ge+her hits taking up space on my iPod.

Their first video, “U + Me = Us (Calculus)” is full of everything you want in a boyband video, complete with the multiple costume changes, synchronized dancing, weird equation arm movements, and Kevin Farley wearing braces and a skintight shirt.

Originally created to poke fun at boybands, 2ge+her actually had a hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with my personal favorite, “The Hardest Part of Breaking Up (Is Getting Back Your Stuff)”, topping out at #87.

Unfortunately, 2ge+her’s run was cut short by the untimely death of one of its stars, Michael Cuccione (Jason “QT” McKnight, the Cute One), at the age of just 16.  Despite their short run, a quick internet search reveals that they have quite the cult following, with DVD copies of their movie commanding $100 on eBay and Amazon.

Even though they’re long gone (10 years this year), they’re always good for some classic boyband stylings mixed with some slightly dirty humor, and a reminder of how good MTV used to be.
